SUCCEED - Standardising the Use, Communication and Capability of studEntsurvEy.ie Data aims to make StudentSurvey.ie data more accessible at academic unit and programme level and therefore provide an evidence-based mechanism to close the feedback loop.

Current Project Phase: Engagement with Academic Units & Students

The team are currently in the engagement phase of their project which involves working with academic units and students. They are currently in the process of meeting with:

  • Heads of academic units, together with course coordinators, to discuss their StudentSurvey.ie results, along with relevant AnSEO - The Student Engagement Office and Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU) initiatives
  • Student focus groups to discuss StudentSurvey.ie results relevant to their discipline, listen to their thoughts on what these results mean and what they think of the survey itself.

Academic units who would like to organise a meeting are invited to make an appointment, through their head of unit, via the booking form below while student focus groups are being organised in cooperation with the Students’ Union and the relevant academic units.

This project is part of MTU’s ‘Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement 2020’ funding allocation from the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, in partnership with the Higher Education Authority, which is being coordinated within MTU by the Teaching and Learning Unit.

What is SUCCEED?

SUCCEED is a university wide project with team membership, including colleagues from the Department of Mathematics, MTU Cork Students Union, AnSEO and TLU along with MTU Kerry Students Union and Student Engagement Office.

The SUCCEED project team, led by Dr Seán Lacey, have produced a standardised reporting structure based on StudentSurvey.ie data that is reproducible across all applicable academic units and programmes.

SUCCEED reports make StudentSurvey.ie data more accessible at academic unit and programme level and therefore provide an evidence-based mechanism to close the feedback loop. The results can be used by academic units to help celebrate success, provide information for course board meetings and programmatic reviews and may inform the coaching and professional development of staff.

What is StudentSurvey.ie?

  • StudentSurvey.ie is an Irish national survey that was piloted from 2013 – 2015 with project working groups basing questions on the US National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) which has been in use since 2000.
  • Since 2016, approximately 70 questions – summarised as 9 indicators/categories – gain insight into student’s ability to develop key capabilities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, writing skills, team-work and communication skills.
  • It is a mechanism to reflect students’ self-reported perceptions of their experiences while studying at the university.

How is Studentsurvey.ie data being used/not used and why?

  • To date, data collected has been mainly used only at an institute level.
  • Concerns with low response rates at an academic unit level and programme level.
  • With data collected since 2016, the importance of a reliable and consistent reporting structure of StudentSurvey.ie data has never been more important across academic units, Campuses, Faculties, Schools, Departments – and at programme level.
  • A standardised reporting structure of StudentSurvey.ie data that could be utilised for course board meetings, programmatic reviews, coaching and professional development of staff in response to results from the survey, feedback with students, etc.

What is the project plan?

  • Produce a standardised reporting structure on StudentSurvey.ie data that is reproducible across all applicable academic units and programmes in MTU.
  • Host an information session at the start of the Academic Year 2021/22, to communicate the vision of how the standardised reporting structure of StudentSurvey.ie data could be utilised across academic units and programmes.
  • Engage with members from academic units to showcase the use and capability of the StudentSurvey.ie results for specific units – e.g., course board meetings, programmatic reviews, coaching and professional development of staff and to celebrate success.
  • Develop short videos/animations to circulate to the student body prior to StudentSurvey.ie February 2022, based on feedback from respective academic units and student representatives.
