The Elevate Leadership Development programme offers leadership skills training on a cohort basis – with particular emphasis on transformation, communication, planning and change. The project enables distributed leadership, emphasising collaboration, with a view to supporting the implementation of MTU Strategy and personal/team professional objectives that align with MTU Strategy. Elevate is being developed and implemented by the Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU) in conjunction with the HR Managers and the MTU Transformation Office.

There are three levels to this programme that are dependent on your previous experience of leadership, your current and previous roles, and your interest in developing leadership skills.

Leadership Fundamentals: This level is aimed at those with an emerging interest in leadership and whose background and exposure to leadership is at a beginner’s level.

Leadership Core: Participants at this level will have had some exposure to leadership concepts (perhaps through formal learning or external activity e.g. coaching a sports team etc) but might not yet had an opportunity to apply that learning/experience in a professional context. Prior work experience as a leader, but not within MTU, might equip one well for this level. Ideally, you will have an identifiable project or activity which you are involved in leading in some way or may have been involved in recently.

Experiential Leadership: This level is best suited to those that have an informal or formal leadership role within the University. This may include managing an administrative team, a student group (as a programme coordinator for example), peer group (a learning community), a research team or an informal group where you are working in a highly collaborative way with others (e.g. chairing a University committee).

Leadership Fundamentals Programme

This Leadership Fundaments programme acts as an introduction to key leadership concepts for those with an emerging interest in leadership and no significant prior experience of undertaking leadership roles.

The programme introduces some key concepts around leadership including traits, behaviours and styles. The programme will establish the profile of good leadership and examine the role of motivation.

The Leadership Core programme aims to support emerging leaders, or those with a first leadership challenge and who may have had some exposure to leadership concepts through practice or formal study.

Through this programme, participants will develop their knowledge of leadership in the context of Higher Education, with an emphasis on the skills and behaviours required to be an effective leader. The Leadership Core programme will look at how we operate within our spheres of influence and also how, through our own leadership, we can best support students and colleagues at MTU.

Experiential Leadership Programme

The Experiential Leadership programme supports established leaders (be they in formal or informal roles) in applying best practice to their leadership experience in a meaningful manner.

By participating in this programme, leaders will be able to examine their own leadership practices in a structured and informed way. The programme will examine the various facets of leadership with emphasis on purpose and strategy as well as how we, as leaders, engage our teams. The programme is indelibly linked to MTU Strategy and seeks to support its implementation with particular emphasis on how we support teaching, learning and assessment.
