Being a Better Coach and Mentor: Setting Yourself Up for Success this Academic Year

Workshop 1

In this ¾hr seminar, we learned how we can include simple strategies into our everyday life to set ourselves up for success, establish boundaries more easily and engage in healthy work habits.

In this session, the following was discussed:

  • How to identify and understand what currently (or has) works (ed) to enable your success and what gets in the way of your success;
  • Using expectation management to help you establish boundaries;
  • Having ‘stock phrases’ available to enable you to say ‘no’ more easily and when necessary;
  • Using the 3-point morning and evening ritual to help you engage and disengage from thoughts of work; and
  • Briefly touching on the Japanese concept of ‘ikigai’ to help you live a fuller life.

This workshop forms part of the Being a Better Coach and Mentor series and is eligible for Continued Professional Development credit contributing to a Coach/Mentor/Supervisor EMCC Global Individual Accreditation.

Workshop 2

Being a Better Coach and Mentor: Exploring 2nd Wave Positive Psychology

In this ¾hr seminar, we revisited the Positive Psychology (PP) movement that was touched on previously with those who participated in the Coaching in Higher Education Foundation Level programme.

We discussed some exciting new ways of bringing PP principles into group settings and the implications for Higher Education Coaching and Mentoring.

In this session, the following was discussed:

  • Tips to successfully teach PP in group settings
  • Potential barriers to successfully teaching PP in groups settings
  • PP in hope therapy
  • PP Intervention using photographs
  • Using strengths in different ways - meeting others with similar strengths
  • Decoding emotions by analysing speech, body, and face
  • Silent gratitude mapping

Being a Better Coach and Mentor: Harnessing Strengths in Teams - A Case Study

In this ¾hr seminar, we examined a specific strengths identification tool and presented a case study where this was used in a marketing team, together with pitfalls and positives. The learning from this example, could help those working in teams utilise this strengths identification tool, or similar, to maximise individual energy and workload.

In this session, the following was discussed:

  • The strengths tool used to identify individual strengths
  • How these individual strengths were then collated and cross-matched for the team
  • The subsequent workshops held
  • The positive outcomes
  • The challenges
  • What could have been done differently?

Being a Better Coach and Mentor: Exploring Rumination & Controlling Negative Rumination

In this ¾hr seminar, we discussed a book chapter, written by the presenter, on rumination. We explored the effects of negative rumination together with Positive Psychology (PP) and coaching methods that help prevent ongoing rumination in adolescents and young adults, and manage established negative rumination habits. 

In this talk, we discussed rumination-related topics such as :

  • Thought intrusion, self-focus and worry,
  • Coping and emotional regulation, and depression,
  • Definitions, effects and discussions in key research from 1991 to 2020
  • Notable PP interventions to help with negative rumination, and suggest how we  canhelp our adolescents and young adults with negative rumination tendencies
