The "Being a Better Coach and Mentor Series", organised by the Teaching and Learning Unit at Munster Technological University, focuses on enhancing coaching and mentoring skills for academic and administrative staff. Through workshops and seminars, participants learn effective frameworks and strategies to build supportive relationships, improve coaching abilities, and foster a positive, growth-oriented culture at MTU.

Workshop 1

Being a Better Coach & Mentor: Challenging Imposter Syndrome (IS)

In this 45-minute seminar, we explored how to address Imposter Syndrome (IS) through coaching and Positive Psychology. Focusing on key concepts like the Dunning-Kruger Effect and the neuroscience behind IS, we discussed how IS manifests through behaviours such as People Pleasing, Perfectionism, Paralysis, and Procrastination (the 4 P’s). Participants also explored how to leverage personal strengths to counteract IS and foster success in coaching and mentoring roles.

By the end of this talk, participants have:

  • Gained an understanding of the Dunning-Kruger Effect and its impact on IS.
  • Discussed the neuroscience of IS and the influence of the 4 P’s.
  • Explored how the 4 P’s of IS affect personal and professional life.
  • Discussed role diversity, inclusion, and their effect on success and leadership.
  • Developed strategies to apply personal strengths to mitigate feelings of IS.

Workshop 2

Being a Better Coach and Mentor: How to help your mentee/coachee gain confidence

In this ¾ hour seminar, we learned key strategies to help your coachee or mentee overcome barriers to confidence. We  explored factors that lead to a loss of confidence and discuss techniques for promoting self-compassion and strength-based growth.

Learning outcomes – by the end of this talk, participants had:

  • Explored elements that can lead to a loss of confidence, such as rumination, negative relationships, and socio-cultural factors.
  • Identified harmful societal beliefs that may still be holding individuals back.
  • Discussed body-mind healing techniques.
  • Understood how to manage the tendency to people please.
  • Discussed ways to practice self-compassion.
  • Identified methods to discover and use personal strengths to build self-confidence.

In this ¾ hour seminar, participants gained insights into how leaders can recognise and develop their unique superpowers. Shelley explored key traits and strategies that enable leaders to drive connection, foster growth, and inspire their teams.

Being a Better Coach and Mentor: Empowering Resilience in Diversity

Empowering resilience for strength and growth is critical in enabling us to overcome challenges, thrive in our personal and professional lives, and contribute meaningfully to our community.

In this ¾ hour seminar, participants looked at how resilience empowers people to lead by example, take calculated risks, and address challenges with poise and determination. We learned about mental and emotional wellbeing, how they are linked and what it takes to rebound stronger after setbacks. We also explored environments that are more equitable, inclusive, and supportive of diverse voices.

In this ¾ hour seminar, participants delved into key aspects of mental and emotional health with a focus on gender-specific issues. The session covered:

  • Explored how mental and emotional health is affected by physical and social health
  • Discussed the impact of family genetics on mental, emotional, and physical health
  • Reflected on female-specific health issues like peri-natal health and female cancers
  • Understanding the impact of female stressors, role overload, and parental burnout
