This funding call enables teams of staff and/or students to develop ideas that might enhance teaching, learning, assessment and student engagement across the student life cycle. The purpose of this session was to provide more information about the funding process itself, outline the supports available, and offer participants an opportunity to hear from previous recipients about what they achieved, how they felt about the experience, and the impact these projects had on staff and students. Michaelsen's TBL: A Different Approach to Groupwork in Higher EducationThursday, 15th May 2025, 10:00 – 11:00 Description This session introduced attendees to TBL, an approach developed by Larry Michaelsen in the 1970s. TBL uses a very structured sequence of activities which nurtures high student engagement and application of learning in the classroom. Publications of studies on TBL have shown a substantial increase in usage of TBL across the globe in the 2010s and early 2020s. Awareness of TBL among educators in Ireland, however, is low. The session illustrated how Michaelsen's TBL differs to the "group project/project-based learning/problem-based learning" approaches or ad-hoc activities often associated with "groupwork" in higher education. The session took attendees through the unique sequence of activities that differentiates TBL from these other approaches. TBL is used across many different disciplines so should give food for thought and ideas for anyone who is looking at approaches for "active learning" or who is interested in alternative ways of incorporating groupwork in their teaching. It is designed to scale well to large class settings and so may be of interest also to those with larger classes. Presented By
