Drawbridge is a drawing research hub based at MTU Crawford College of Art & Design. The Drawbridge Team plans to consult with STEM practitioners to produce a series of 4 videos addressing the value of contemporary drawing methods and techniques within the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

What is the Project plan/aims?
By utilising the artistic knowledge and capabilities of the Drawbridge team, it is our objective to create a specialised online video resource in which MTU staff, students and the wider drawing community can learn about the importance of drawing within specific fields and how they can apply this knowledge in their education.
These videos will demonstrate how drawing can strengthen spatial awareness and problem-solving skills, build confidence and ultimately help communicate thoughts and ideas through making drawings by hand. New skills will be learned through drawings’ capacity to engage in experimentation in action and creative awareness will be expanded.
Why is this project important?
With this project Drawbridge will generate research-based evidence that will have a positive impact on the development and consolidation of the notion of a STEAM educational environment instead of only STEM within MTU.
Drawing practice, rather than art as a finished product, supports an alternative, embodied, process-based and practical concrete approach to problem solving, thinking through ideas, and lends itself to cross-disciplinary research and communication. Drawbridge hopes to sustain this avenue of research beyond 2021 by using the feedback generated from this project to establish future research-based resource projects within the different disciplines of MTU. The core of Drawbridge is drawing, and how it can both clarify and give rise to new thoughts and ideas. Through utilising this ‘drawing as thinking’ approach, other MTU courses can benefit from generating ideas through our fundamental understanding of drawing and mark-making.
What will be delivered or different at the end of this SATLE project?
At the end of this SATLE project, a series of creative and promotional videos will be created which will have a positive impact on MTU students, staff and the wider drawing community. We are committed to student success as the outcome of a quality education and regard this project as a major step in promoting and consolidating current student and staff research excellence in drawing and related fields. Learning from this experience, partnership between the MTU main campus and CCAD will be strengthened and enhanced, with the possibility of other research-based collaborations being generated in the future between Drawbridge and disciplines within MTU for example School of Music and NMCI.
