Purpose

  • To explore and advance user-centred design principles in academia.
  • To create opportunities for collaboration between academia, public sector, and industry on service design initiatives.
  • To align Learning Community goals with MTU’s strategic objectives.
  • To engage new members in actively shaping the Learning Community’s direction.

Summary

  • The Learning Community hosted the ‘Service Design: The Opportunity for Academia’ event on 17th October 2023, featuring internationally recognised service design expert Professor Birgit Mager.
  • The event focused on the rise of service design in Ireland and its intersection with academia.
  • Guest speakers included Julianne Coughlan (Cork County Council), Karen Fitzgerald (Fáilte Ireland), John Lynch (Context Studio), and Dr. Sarah Hayes.
  • The event was free and open to the public, with all tickets fully booked.
  • Over 20 staff members and up to 25 students benefited from participation.
  • No events were run in the subsequent academic year, as efforts were focused on developing leadership skills for future LC sustainability.
  • Participation in ‘Leading Learning Communities’ training informed plans for enhancing leadership and strategy for the LC.
  • Plans are underway to align the Learning Community’s goals with university-wide strategic priorities and recruit new active members for upcoming initiatives.
  • The Learning Community aims to restructure and relaunch in the next academic year, with a clearer focus on strategic alignment and active participation.
