Purpose
This Learning Community was established to explore and develop cross-disciplinary collaboration in the performing arts, specifically between theatre and music students. The primary aim is to bridge the gap between academia and the professional industry by providing students with opportunities to engage with leading artists in the field. Through hands-on workshops and immersive experiences, students will enhance their ability to collaborate across disciplines, develop new creative skills, and gain insights into professional practices.
A particular focus is placed on devising and multidisciplinary performance techniques, ensuring students are equipped with the communication and artistic skills necessary to work effectively in collaborative, real-world settings. Additionally, the Learning Community promotes well-being and self-care practices for educators and facilitators, recognising the demands placed on creative practitioners.
Summary
This Cross-Disciplinary Practices in Theatre and Music Learning Community has engaged in a range of activities designed to enhance cross-disciplinary learning and professional development. A key initiative this year is a day-long workshop at Teac Damsa, where students will have the opportunity to observe and work with a leading Irish theatre maker. This experience will enable them to refine their communication skills across disciplines, gain insight into professional creative processes, and establish connections with industry professionals. If the originally intended facilitator is unavailable, alternative artists such as Mikel Murfi or Luke Murphy will be invited.
Additionally, the Learning Community is committed to fostering supportive well-being practices for staff involved in facilitation. Plans are underway for two workshops, one per semester, led by expert somatic practitioners such as Joan Davis or Linda Hartley. These sessions will provide a restorative space for educators, helping to sustain their teaching practices and well-being.
The Learning Community continues to expand its reach by involving staff and students from multiple disciplines, including Drama and Theatre, Musical Theatre, Classical Music, Pop, and the MA in Music Technology. Future plans include further collaborative projects and the integration of best practices in interdisciplinary performance training.
