Purpose

The Assessment Design for Evaluating Practical Competency Learning Community aims to examine the current teaching and assessment practices at the School of Music, particularly within the Department of Orchestral Studies, with a view to expanding to a School-wide setting. The focus is on improving accommodations for staff and students with additional needs, particularly in practical-based settings. While resources exist for written assessments, there is a lack of guidance for practical examinations and instruction. Given the diversity of courses and students, a universal approach does not fit, necessitating a framework for discussion, experimentation, and adaptation. While the primary focus is on music and drama, findings from this Learning Community could be transferable to other MTU departments and disciplines.

Summary

  • During the 2023-24 academic year, a small group of lecturers convened in February to explore how modifications to current structures—applications, assessments, and learning environments—could facilitate accessibility for those with additional needs. While initial impact was limited, the Learning Community has initiated important conversations and awareness campaigns, setting the stage for cultural change. Suggestions from these discussions included workshops, presentations, and training sessions, which are planned for the upcoming academic year.
  • For 2024-25, the Learning Community plans to expand its membership from Department level to School level, broadening the impact and reach of its initiatives. The following objectives have been set:
  • Conduct a comprehensive review of teaching and assessment practices with a focus on practical-based delivery and assessment.
  • Identify and evaluate current mechanisms that support students and staff with additional needs in practical-based settings.
  • Highlight and promote techniques and approaches that have shown success in inclusive practical learning.
  • Host guest speakers and organise workshops to enhance staff training and awareness.
  • Expand the Learning Community’s membership to encompass all four departments within the School of Music.
  • The Learning Community will be led by Tom Doyle and will meet monthly in person starting in September 2023. The foundation of the group is already in place, consisting of five lecturers actively engaged in discussions about enhancing assessment structures. Future activities will include the production of assessment materials in accessible formats and organising masterclasses and training opportunities to support staff and students with additional needs.

Additional Information

The Learning Community acknowledges that change in this area requires a long-term approach and will continue to champion accessibility and adaptability in assessment practices. Discussions are ongoing about synergies with other Learning Communities within MTU to further enhance impact and best practice sharing.
