Purpose
- To initiate and maintain a Culture of Research within the Department of Applied Social Studies.
- To align with MTU’s Strategic Plan 2022-2027, which aims to expand research in humanities and social sciences and increase the number of research students.
- To develop a research strategy that engages staff, students, and alumni.
- To create a supportive environment where research is expected, discussed, produced, and valued.
Summary
- The Learning Community was established to strategise research development within the department.
- A departmental survey was conducted to capture staff insights, ideas, and priorities for research development.
- Two facilitated workshops (9th February 2024 & 8th March 2024) with Dr. Threase Finnegan-Kessie helped define research goals and structure a long-term plan.
- A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis identified strengths, challenges, and areas for future research focus.
- This process led to the creation of the Strategic Plan (2024-2027), titled "Waking the Giant", reflecting staff aspirations and departmental research ambitions.
- The LC is transitioning from the ‘Gestation’ phase to the ‘Expansion’ phase, where the focus will shift towards implementing key research objectives and expanding participation.
- The Learning Community will continue monthly meetings to guide the next phase, ensuring active student and alumni involvement to enhance the research culture.
- Over 20 staff members and 25-50 students have directly benefited from the Learning Community’s activities.
