Purpose
This Learning Community focuses on the enhancement and integration of simulation-based training within maritime education. By leveraging cutting-edge simulator technology, the group aims to refine and develop training exercises that closely replicate real-world maritime operations. The initiative is designed to ensure that both students and staff are equipped with the latest methodologies in simulation training, fostering greater competency and preparedness in professional maritime environments.
Key Objectives:
- Strengthen the use of simulation training by refining exercise design and assessment methods.
- Support mentorship and onboarding for new staff through structured simulation training.
- Facilitate collaboration with other institutions and industries that use simulation-based learning.
- Expand interdisciplinary engagement by inviting faculty from across MTU to explore the applications of simulation technology.
- Identify areas for research collaboration in the field of simulation-based maritime education.
Summary
During the 2023-24 academic year, the Learning Community engaged in several key activities:
- Hosted departmental workshops to discuss the future needs of simulation-based learning.
- Developed a scope of work based on departmental needs, which has successfully secured additional support.
- Conducted training sessions for staff on simulator functionality and best practices.
- Held informal discussions on exercise design and assessment within simulation training.
For 2024-25, the Learning Community aims to:
- Arrange site visits to other simulation centres, such as aviation and medical training facilities, to benchmark best practices.
- Establish a mentorship schedule for new staff to enhance their familiarity with simulation training.
- Expand outreach to other MTU departments, encouraging interdisciplinary use of simulation technologies.
- Develop collaborative research initiatives to explore further applications of simulation within higher education.
This Learning Community provides an essential platform for knowledge exchange and skill development, ensuring that simulation training continues to evolve as a cornerstone of maritime education at MTU.
Additional Information
With new staff joining in September and the retirement of a key simulation subject matter expert, this Learning Community plays a crucial role in knowledge transfer and staff development. The structured mentorship and hands-on simulation training will not only support new team members but also help preserve institutional expertise, ensuring the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of simulation-based education at NMCI.
