Purpose:

A Learning Community initiated to support lecturers involved in the delivery of foreign languages.

Summary of Activities:

Languages and Cultures LC 2021/2 Academic year activities.

Semester 1:

  • Language teaching was still confined to 100% remote delivery to allow for distancing and capacity requirements on campus. LC activities postponed until Semester 2.

Semester 2:

  • February 2022: Guest speaker Dr Nadia Albalegejo from WIT ‘The Importance of Metacognition: a Social Cognitive Approach to Self-regulated Second Language Learning (SLA)’.
  • Throughout semester 2 teaching weeks: Interventions on national culture, cultural norms, customs and language/s by natives of Brazil, South Africa, Czech Republic and Serbia and by members of staff who had experience of living in China and Bahrain with students during sessions of Cultural Studies modules (2 module groups in different years of study at MTU Cork). Facilitated by Mike Falahee and Ríona Flood.
  • June 2022: Guest speaker Dr Filippo Nereo, Institute for Innovation and Teaching Excellence & Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Keele University ‘Supporting research-based teaching in modern languages’.
  • Throughout the semester: Occasional LC member meetings to discuss plans for use of funding and to delegate various tasks and discuss future plans for our LC, and to review progress and events executed.

Learning Community Activities 2023-24

  • 5th June 2024: Workshop with Dr Ana Isabel Garcia Abellan on "Innovative Educational Project in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning Contexts."
