The Elevate Leadership Development programmes, developed and implemented by the Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU) in conjunction with the HR Managers and the MTU Transformation Office, offers leadership skills training on a cohort basis – with particular emphasis on transformation, communication, planning and change. The project enables distributed leadership, emphasising collaboration, with a view to supporting the implementation of MTU Strategy and personal/team professional objectives that align with MTU Strategy.

Current News - Now Open for Applications for 2023/24

We are now taking applications for participation in the Elevate Leadership Development programme for 2023/24 through our online application form.

Please refer to the brochure which has been circulated by email in making your decision to be involved. As part of this signup process, you will need to indicate that you have agreed your involvement with your line manager.

Delivered for the first time in Semester 2 of 2022-23, Elevate allowed staff to self-select one of three leadership programmes that reflects their current experience of leadership. We are currently assessing the impact of Elevate on participants, but the following provides a brief insight into the views of participants on the impact of the programmes on various aspects of their careers and approaches to work.

There are three levels to this programme that are dependent on your previous experience of leadership, your current and previous roles, and your interest in developing leadership skills:

  • Leadership Fundamentals Programme
  • Leadership Core Programme
  • Experiential Leadership Programme

Leadership Fundamentals Programme

Target Audience

This level is aimed at those with an emerging interest in leadership and whose background and exposure to leadership is at a beginner’s level.

Description

This programme acts as an introduction to key leadership concepts for those with an emerging interest in leadership and no significant prior experience of undertaking leadership roles.

The programme introduces some key concepts around leadership including traits, behaviours and styles. The programme will establish the profile of good leadership and examine the role of motivation.

Leadership Core Programme

Target Audience

This level is aimed at those with an emerging interest in leadership and whose background and exposure to leadership is at a beginner’s level.

Description

This programme aims to support emerging leaders, or those with a first leadership challenge and who may have had some exposure to leadership concepts through practice or formal study.

Through this programme, participants will develop their knowledge of leadership in the context of Higher Education, with an emphasis on the skills and behaviours required to be an effective leader. The Leadership Core programme will look at how we operate within our spheres of influence and also how, through our own leadership, we can best support students and colleagues at MTU.

Experiential Leadership Programme

Target Audience

This level is best suited to those that have an informal or formal leadership role within the University. This may include managing an administrative team, a student group (as a programme coordinator for example), peer group (a learning community), a research team or an informal group where you are working in a highly collaborative way with others (e.g. chairing a University committee).

Description

This programme supports established leaders (be they in formal or informal roles) in applying best practice to their leadership experience in a meaningful manner.  

By participating in this programme, leaders will be able to examine their own leadership practices in a structured and informed way. The programme will examine the various facets of leadership with emphasis on purpose and strategy as well as how we, as leaders, engage our teams. The programme is indelibly linked to MTU Strategy and seeks to support its implementation with particular emphasis on how we support teaching, learning and assessment.
