Objective

To trial the online application tool Top Hat and assess the impact of the application on teaching and learning from a student and staff perspective.

Key outcomes/findings

  • Top Hat is an easy-to-use tool that provides an interactive set of features to enhance student engagement both inside and outside the classroom
  • The instructors using Top Hat are enthusiastic about the application and have found it to be a beneficial teaching tool.
  • Overall the majority of students reported that the use of Top Hat enhanced their learning experience and they found:
    • It kept them engaged in class
    • It was easy to access notes and content
    • Encouraged them to attend class
    • It easier to access than Blackboard
